Curriculum Intent

All children should have the opportunity to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.  We understand that it is important for lessons to have a skills-based focus, and that the knowledge can be taught through this. We encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at the school and beyond. The Science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living. We believe science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. Throughout the programmes of study, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific skills. We ensure that the Working Scientifically skills are built-on and developed throughout children’s time at the school so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently and continue to ask questions and be curious about their surroundings.

“ Science is my favourite subject. I like learning about the world around us. You can learn about different things” Jack Kingfisher (Year 3)

What our Science Governor visit said about Science at Corpus Christi

"I had the privileged position to undertake scrutiny visits examining the delivery of the science curriculum at Corpus Christi. Most recently this included a science walk during science week 2023.

Careful lesson planning is evident with pupils being encouraged to predict, question, use and develop reasoning skills alongside the continual promotion of key scientific vocabulary.

I have observed first hand throughout the school from early years, key stage 1 and key stage 2, the delivery of engaging, interesting and challenging science lessons which are enjoyed by all pupils at Corpus Christi.

Throughout the school I have observed the children at Corpus show a deep interest and focus when undertaking practical science investigations with beautifully laid out work in their books. Children are able to explain their science work and behaviour in all classes was exemplary.

The science lead Miss Smith is passionate about science and the delivery of the science curriculum at Corpus Christi, across all phase and year groups, is inspiring the pupils at Corpus Christi to be the scientists of tomorrow"
