Sustainability and Ecology

Ecology Sustainable Nature Planet Conversation Concept, Ecology ...

Sustainability and ecology are central to life in the modern world—at home, in society and within education. At Corpus Christi RC Primary School, we are committed to nurturing a deep respect for God’s creation and to promoting environmental responsibility as an integral part of our Catholic mission. Inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, we recognise our shared responsibility to care for our common home and to act with justice, compassion and stewardship.

Our approach to sustainability begins with providing a caring, engaging and environmentally conscious learning environment. Set within extensive grounds, the school benefits from a rich natural landscape, offering pupils regular opportunities to explore, observe and connect with nature. These surroundings play a vital role in supporting experiential learning and fostering curiosity about the natural world.

Pupils across the school participate in active, age-appropriate learning about environmental issues. Our library and classrooms are well resourced with texts that celebrate the Earth and highlight the work of environmental leaders and organisations. Sustainability education is carefully structured across year groups, with topics increasing in depth and complexity as pupils progress through the school. Lessons are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and are underpinned by Catholic Social Teaching, helping children to understand global challenges and their relevance to everyday life.

Examples of sustainability learning across the school include:

  • Nursery: Children develop an early awareness of the natural world through sensory exploration, caring for plants, observing seasonal changes and learning how to look after their environment through simple routines such as tidying and recycling.
  • Reception: Pupils explore living things, habitats and the importance of caring for animals and plants. They learn how their everyday choices, such as saving water and energy, can help protect the world around them.
  • Year 1: Children learn about plants, animals and their habitats, including how humans can care for the environment. They are introduced to the concepts of reducing waste and reusing materials through practical activities and discussions.
  • Year 2: Pupils deepen their understanding of sustainability by learning about different habitats, the importance of biodiversity and how recycling and reducing waste helps to protect the planet.
  • Year 3: Pupils are taught about food miles, exploring how far food travels before reaching shops and considering the environmental impact of transportation.
  • Year 4: Fair trade is studied in detail, helping pupils understand ethical production and the journey of food from farm to fork.
  • Year 5: Pupils explore the concept of fast fashion and its environmental impact, encouraging them to reflect on whether current lifestyles are sustainable.
  • Year 6: Pupils calculate an average family’s carbon footprint and study the life cycle of materials such as plastic, developing a deeper understanding of global environmental challenges.
A key strength of our sustainability work is our Laudato Si’ Team, a pupil-led group who play an active role in promoting care for creation across the school community. The team helps to raise awareness of environmental issues through assemblies, classroom initiatives and whole-school campaigns. They support practical actions such as monitoring recycling, encouraging energy and water conservation, and leading prayer and reflection linked to stewardship of the Earth.
Environmental responsibility is also demonstrated through our approach to waste management. The school actively recycles paper, card, metal and plastic. Food waste is managed responsibly, with compostable materials reused where possible, enabling pupils to see sustainable practices in action and understand their impact. We work with Oldham Council and annually we hold our 'litter pick' in the local community.
Growing food is a valuable part of our sustainability education. Through gardening activities, pupils learn where food comes from and develop a greater appreciation for healthy eating and the environment. Gardening supports pupils’ wellbeing, concentration and sense of responsibility, while also strengthening links with the wider community.
Promoting sustainable travel is another key focus. We encourage pupils and families to walk, scoot or cycle to school whenever possible and support this through regular initiatives that promote active, environmentally friendly travel.
At Corpus Christi RC Primary School, we believe children are powerful agents of change. Through the work of our curriculum, our Laudato Si’ Team and our wider school community, we aim to instil a lifelong respect for the natural world, a strong sense of shared responsibility and a commitment to caring for our common home, both locally and globally.
